Potential Contaminant Migration at a Contaminated Soils Landfill Site in Quebec
The case study presented in this paper concerns the performance of an existing contaminated soils landfill site lined with a double geomembrane system. The main steps of the case study were: 1) perform a complete characterization of the natural soil layer underlying the site; 2) design an effective groundwater flow model; 3) calibrate the model based on field data; 4) use a contaminant transport model considering various pessimistic scenarios in order to assess the performance of the lining system. The results show that the lining system performs as required and that the risk of contaminant migration is negligible. The excellent hydrogeological conditions of the site play an important role in this performance.
