The Production of Toluol from Gas Plants
Toluol is the hydro-carbon which forms the base of the well-known explosive, T.N.T. In 1914, the production of toluol in the United States was estimated at 700 000 gal. for the year; during the war the United States Ordnance Department undertook measures to increase the production and, at the time of the signing of the armistice, it was conservatively estimated that, at the end of 1919, such production would have been at a rate of at least 32 000 000 gal. per year.
