Condition Assessment of Timber Piles
Recent applications of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques developed for timber have made possible condition assessment of structures that have previously been difficult to evaluate. Condition assessment using stress wave velocity and resistance drilling has been subjected to limited field trials. Stress wave velocity is used as a means of rapidly screening the timber to identify areas which require more detailed inspection. Resistance drilling is then used to quantify the extent of degradation. The combined use of these techniques allows for efficient condition assessment of critical timbers. This paper presents a case study of how these techniques were integrated to assess the condition of foundation piles.
