Combined Kinematic and Inertial Seismic Analysis of Marine Structures
In performance-based seismic design, a marine structure is designed for inertial loading effects associated with the dynamic response of the structure. Some waterfront structures also experience seismically induced kinematic effects, associated with soil liquefaction and lateral spreading. There is currently no specific guidance in codes or standards for how to combine the kinematic and inertial effects. Also, there is variations in opinion in practice when it comes to addressing these analyses. This paper explores considerations for determining proper load combinations for inertial and kinematic demands, and presents in detail a preferred analysis approach for analyzing a coupled response of these effects. Finally, this “how-to” addresses practical considerations for performing these evaluations.
