Site Variability Characterization Using Cone Penetration Test Data
This paper presents a site variability analysis algorithm that takes cone penetration test CPT data as input and quantifies both horizontal and vertical site variability using variability indices. The vertical variability is quantified via the vertical variability index VVI which considers both the inter-layer and intra-layer variability as inferred from CPT sounding data. The horizontal variability is quantified via the horizontal variability index HVI which is calculated considering the spacing between soundings, the cross correlation of tip resistances, and the difference in absolute magnitude of tip resistance between all pairs of soundings within test site. The application of the algorithm to three sites with different in situ variabilities is presented. Results show that the algorithm can adequately differentiate and quantify different levels of in situ vertical and horizontal variability observed at the sites.
