Environmental Guidelines for Confined Disposal Facilities for Contaminated Dredged Material
This paper gives an overview of the work of the PIANC working group ENVICOM 5. The task of this Working Group was to establish Environmental Guidelines for Confined Disposal Facilities for Contaminated Dredged Material. These guidelines are published in April of 2002. The realisation and construction of a Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) is a complex and not standard process. In this process of the realisation of a CDF a lot of different fields of expertise have to be considered like civil engineering, landscaping, chemistry, legislation, social impact, environmental engineering and so on. Every case is unique and there are no simple answers. In order to give guidance and to show existing experiences, the Environmental Committee of PIANC gave this working group the task to give a compact and clear overview over the common practise and experiences. The different types of Confined Disposal Facilities, from aquatic disposal to land disposal are dealt with. The special subject is the containment of contaminated dredged material. This means that special measures are taken to avoid potential releases to the environment. The starting point is that the decision to make a CDF is already been made.
