Investigating the Relationships between the Electrical Resistivity Characteristics and the Volumetric Properties of Asphalt Mixtures
A novel approach is introduced for investigating the relationships between the electrical resistivity characteristics, , and the volumetric properties of asphalt mixtures, i.e., bulk specific gravity, , air voids in mixture, , and voids in mineral aggregates, . It is well known the volumetric properties of asphalt mixtures are controlled by several variables, i.e., aggregate gradation, aggregate type, filler type, bitumen type, and bitumen content. In this study, the effects of both variables of aggregate gradation and bitumen content are investigated on the electrical resistivity of asphalt mixtures and some correlations are developed between the electrical resistivity and the volumetric properties of laboratory compacted asphalt mixture specimens. For this purpose, 455 Marshall specimens containing calcareous type crushed stone aggregate with penetration asphalt binder were fabricated and tested at five different aggregate gradations and seven varied bitumen contents with 13 replicate specimens for each experimental combination. Statistical ANOVA and significance tests were conducted on the test data and the effects of electrical resistivity on the volumetric properties were evaluated. Finally, some simple correlations were formed between the two data sets by using regression analysis.
