Risk-Based Slope Hazard Evaluation System
Concerns regarding slope stability exist for large-scale linear projects (such as interstate pipelines) as they may pose a risk to construction practices as well as the construction-phase and long-term safety of the area and installed resource. Frequently, planning and routing studies for these linear projects include a category to consider the potential to cross steep slopes and potential landslide areas; however, proper assessment for the concern must be given as the risk created by these geohazards can amount to a costly oversight with implications during construction, following construction, and with long-term operation and maintenance. During the evaluation and route planning of a recent interstate pipeline project, the authors hypothesized and implemented the use of a point-based rating system based on available desktop information, fundamentals of slope stability, and sensitivity analyses of the various conditions within the geographic region. The results of the rating system was used to inform project decision makers and stakeholders of the concern of certain areas.
