Dataset for Empirical Assessment of Seismic Performance for Levees Founded on Peaty Organic Soils
Levees founded on peaty organic soils are particularly vulnerable to seismic damage as peat can potentially amplify ground motions and undergo large deformation during or following cyclic loading. Our long-term objective is to investigate the seismic fragility of levees founded on peat using field performance data, which can be a useful tool for seismic risk assessment. In this paper, we present the dataset being compiled for this purpose, which is comprised of field performance data and supporting information of two levee systems in Hokkaido, Japan. Both systems were strongly shaken and damaged during the 1993 M 7.6 Kushiro-oki and 2003 M 8.2 Tokachi-oki earthquakes. Database components include ground motion intensity measures inferred from recordings, levee damage descriptions from post-earthquake reconnaissance, and geotechnical data for the levees and foundation soils.
