Augercast Piles: South Florida Experience
Augercast piles are commonly used in south Florida to support heavily loaded structures including high-rise condominium towers, hotels, and arenas. South Florida's geologically young sedimentary rock is ideally suited to this pile type since the rock can be readily augered yet sustain high applied load at low displacement. In the early 1980's, individual augercast pile capacities on the order of 625 kN (70 tons) were used for 355-mm-dia (14-in-dia) piles. With recent equipment and construction material advances, 615-mm-dia (24-in-dia) piles for future projects are being evaluated to potentially sustain design loads of 4000 kN (450 tons). Selected cases from past and current projects are presented to illustrate the use of the augercast pile in south Florida, with particular emphasis on experience gained by the author's firm on projects in the coastal areas of Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. A database developed from over sixty full-scale field compression and six lateral load tests is presented and compared to the results of theoretical analysis and correlations available in the literature.
