Emulative Detailing in Precast Concrete Systems
The ACI/ASCE Joint Committee 550 on Precast Concrete Structures recently published an updated "Guide to Emulating Cast-in-Place Detailing for Seismic Design of Precast Concrete Structures" (ACI 550.1R-09). This paper will summarize key aspects of emulative detailing using the guide including connection methods and details for columns, walls, beams and floor/roof elements. Emulative detailing can be used in any structure to meet normal as well as seismic detailing requirements. Reference will also be made to current building codes that affect design decisions. Emulative details typically connect individual reinforcing bars with couplers or within closure pours. Many examples of emulative connection details will be shown with recommendations for using them successfully in structures. The performance history of this method worldwide has been outstanding with many tall buildings constructed in high seismic regions such as Japan.
