Influence of Alkaline Alteration on the Shear Characteristics of a Bentonite-Sand Mixture
The paper presents the influence of alkaline alteration on shear characteristics of bentonite-sand mixture. The Ca-type bentonite and the bentonite-sand mixture were immersed in NaOH or Ca(OH)2 solutions. Triaxial compression tests were executed using the immersed specimens. Mineral composition, leacheable cation and microstructure of the sample after the testing were investigated. Dissolution of minerals and precipitation of secondary materials by alkaline solutions changes shear strength. For the bentonite, dissolution of minerals significantly occurred, residual stress decreased, on the other hand, decrease in the residual stress in the bentonite-sand mixture was relatively small. The mixture of sand, remarkably, plays a role in controlling decrease in residual stress.
