Coastal Flood and Erosion Damage Functions for Mid- and High-Rise Buildings
Existing flood and erosion damage functions typically relate water depth above the lowest floor and percent of footprint undermined to estimate damage to a building. Unfortunately, existing damage functions are based largely on opinion and flood insurance claims data for low-rise buildings. Thus, most existing damage functions generally are unsuitable for mid- and high-rise residential buildings on deep foundations, which exist in large numbers along our coasts. The present work utilized post-storm investigation results to modify existing damage functions and to develop new damage functions more appropriate to tall buildings. A simplified method and a detailed method were developed to predict inundation, wave and erosion damage. Application of either method requires general information about a building, including foundation type. The simplified method estimates damage based on overall structure characteristics and value. The detailed method requires more knowledge of a building, but estimates damages to various building stories and assemblies.
