Evaluation of Adhesive Bonded Steel Concrete Composite Structures
Adhesive bonding is a technique for joining parts that is frequently used in automotive and aviation industry. Although there were several applications in steel and concrete structures such as bridges in the last decades, this technology did not become a common structural application in building industry. Application of adhesive bonding in structural composite members is a new field of study. Adhesive bonding can be used in the connection between concrete slab and steel profile to transfer forces between both composite partners. Compared to the load transfer by headed studs improvements can be realized by activating a continuous shear transfer between concrete and steel. The bonded connection will improve the stiffness of the composite member. Therefore several tests including push out tests according to EC 4 and tests on composite beams were carried out and compared to nonlinear FE calculations with ANSYS. The preliminary tests carried out aimed on the investigation of the behaviour of adhesively bonded joints between steel and concrete. To study the typical characteristics of adhesives in combination with steel and concrete high-strength polyaddition curing adhesives were examined. To promote a good adhesive bond cleaning and pre-treatment of the surface prior to bonding is of outmost importance. Therefore different pre-treatments for steel and concrete surfaces and their effect on the load behaviour and deformation capacity were considered. The push out tests according to EC 4 and the tests on composite beams were carried out with two adhesives used in the preliminary tests. The composite beams had a span of 7, 0 m and were also prepared with different pre-treatments for steel and concrete surfaces. The composite beams showed a very high load capacity with a high stiffness during the tests.
