It is a common remark that in regard to metrology, harmony of action between the Unitetl States and Great Britain would be very desimble, on account, firstly, of the magnitude of the commercial and other intercourse between the two countries, and secondly, the correspondence already existing between their weights and measures. This opinion was expressed in several of the reports made about three years ago by the department and bureau officers of the United States Government in reply to a resolution of the House of Representatives which drew out their opinions upon metrological reform. There would be more force in the suggestion if past experience encouraged us to hope for any united action; there is certainly reason in it, for it recognizes the importance of taking foreign nations into consideration; both of the assertions upon which it is based require to be scrutinized.
