On the Performance of Velocity Measurement Techniques in Air-Water Flows
In order to study air-water flows in physical models of hydraulic structures or in field experimentation, velocity data are often needed. In this paper, the authors review the application of three different types of instrumentation on measuring velocities in air-water flows of low or high air content: the back-flushing Pitot tube, the double fiber-optical probe and the acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADV). Velocity and air concentration data are shown, namely those obtained in the overtopping facility constructed at the Colorado State University (CSU, Fort Collins, Colorado), in the stepped chutes assembled at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC, Lisbon) and the Laboratory of Hydraulic Constructions of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), as well as in a channel at Reclamation's Water Resources Research Laboratory (Denver, Colorado). A discussion is included on the effect of aeration on the accuracy of the above described velocity measurement techniques.
