Special Inspections and Rehabilitation of Concrete Bridges in Finland
While general inspections are performed on all public bridges in Finland every 5 years, special inspections are warranted when the extent of structural or functional deficiencies mandates action. On concrete bridge decks, the development of deficiencies is often associated with the gradual failure of deck waterproofing systems. Special inspections are initiated to determine the type and extent of damage so that appropriate rehabilitation decisions can be made. The purpose of this paper is to describe the strategic field sampling and advanced laboratory testing involved in special inspections of concrete bridge decks in Finland and to document through a case study how the data are used in making engineering decisions about deck rehabilitation.
