Watkins Road Force Main Rehabilitation “ Challenges and Successes” for North Charleston Sewer District
The North Charleston Sewer District’s (NCSD) Watkins Road Force Main is a 24-in. cast iron pipe installed in the early 1970s. It is approximately 1,300 linear feet (LF) long and crosses beneath a railroad and under the marshes of the Ashley River. A leak was discovered in the marsh crossing and repaired in November 2018. During repair, video inspection showed its poor condition and additional small holes in the bottom of the pipe. It was laid mostly beneath the marsh, across a marsh island, and below the CSX Railroad in a tunnel, making access difficult. Replacement and rehabilitation of the pipe were considered. This is the case study of the rehabilitation.
