Below the Flood Line
To eliminate a grade crossing of rail lines, the Port of Vancouver USA, in Vancouver, Washington, elected to route a new line to its entrance beneath a bridge carrying a major north–south line. The new line would be well below the 100-year flood elevation of the adjacent Columbia River. To protect it from most flood events, the port constructed an innovative trench structure that will ensure uninterrupted rail service during high water and minimize infiltration from floodwaters.
