Validity of Industry Benchmarks and Metrics for Engineering Productivity
In order to evaluate the productivity of a project or a group of projects, the estimate or the schedule of the project in hand should be compared to those of other projects of similar nature. In the absence of proper data and points of comparison within the organization, industry standards and metrics are usually used. The standard industry metrics commonly used for assessing the productivity of the engineering phase of construction projects are the ratio of engineering hours per quantity of designed elements and the ratio of engineering cost to total installed cost (TIC) of the projects. The research into the validity of these industry standards for projects with different sizes is very limited. The scope of this paper is to assess the validity of the existing industry metrics for engineering productivity by illustrating the effect of projects size on the expected values of these metrics.
