A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Standardized lumber production resulted primarily from necessity. When commercial timber was cut and used only locally, the problem was relatively simple; but, with depletion of nearby supplies, stocks had to be secured from many sources and localities. Different standards of manufacture met head on at the distribution centers and confusion ensued. The development of national standards took place after the organization of regional and national lumber manufacturers' associations so me 50 years ago. Government bureaus, with their scientists, gave inestimable encouragement and help. Continuous and consistent improvements have meanwhile taken place, so that today there is excellence and uniformity of grading practice. Engineers can be assured of receiving quality material to meet specific needs.
