A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
A New Stormwater ``Source Control'' Handbook for Australian Practice: An Outline
An awakening has occurred around the World to the need for sustainable storm drainage systems. A plethora of `guideline' documents is available but very little `step-by-step' advice needed by the student, the novice practitioner and the busy municipal engineer. The new Handbook attempts to meet this need for Australian practice. The paper presents a brief overview of the main aspects addressed in the Handbook including - use of detention or retention techniques in stormwater `source control'; the problems associated with water-reactive clays; emptying time (or "drain time"); the three domains of stormwater management - flood control, pollution control, stormwater harvesting; strategies for Council decision-making; nine design procedures covering 16 different devices or systems; ten illustrative examples. The immediate research needs of sustainable stormwater management are reviewed.
