Long-Term Performance of Engineered Fills
This paper discusses empirical results of long-term monitoring of deep engineered fills. To date, few studies have been published on performance of deep fills which have been placed at above-optimum moisture conditions. The fills in this study were placed for three projects in Northern California in the 1990s and are up to approximately 33.5 m (110 ft) feet deep. The fill materials on each of the three sites varied, but in general consist of fine-grained soils at one site; coarse-grained fill at a second site; and a mixture of sand and fine-grained soils at a third site. The moisture and density specifications developed for fill placement were based on pre-construction laboratory tests. To evaluate the performance of these materials, the fills were instrumented with a system that allows vertical-displacement measurement throughout the fill thickness. Monitoring of these fills continues. Settlement/heave data versus depth for up to 16 years are provided. This information is used to tailor variable fill placement specifications (moisture and density) based on plasticity. The resulting grading specifications have resulted in relatively small differential and overall settlement.
