Energy-Based Seismic Fragility Analysis of Actively Controlled Structures
Damage indices based on energy concept have been proposed in the past to measure structural damage while compensating for the inadequacy of ductility criteria. However, these indices are either based on implicitly defined energy as cumulative effect or unable to consider the energy in a quantitative manner. In this paper, damage is quantified based on the plastic energy ratio by analytically calculating the plastic energy. This calculation uses the force analogy method to evaluate the structural response and energy in the inelastic domain. Fragility analysis based on 25 adjusted earthquake records with similar 5% damped response spectra is employed to correlate the plastic energy ratio with the interstory drift ratio at the life safety limit state. Inelastic structural deformation is expected to occur during major earthquakes, and active control based on optimal linear control algorithm is used to improve the structural performance.
