Geocharacteristics of Tabuk Expansive Shale and Its Links to Structural Damage
The Tabuk expansive shale is known as to cause the most serious problems for foundation design in the north-western parts of Saudi Arabia. The damage caused by this type of formation is at a scale not related to the usual behavior of low-plasticity clay. This study covered a broad investigation of geotechnical properties of clay shale from the region. Justification of damage is viewed in relation to the placement and geoenvironmental conditions. The swelling pressure and the swell percent were measured for several samples. The clay moisture content and density state had significant role in estimating the swelling pressure exerted on structures. This investigation also surveyed the practice of construction on this typical formation over the last two decades. The advantage and disadvantage of different design protocols used were highlighted. Treatment and stabilization approaches for substrata supporting light structures were suggested. This work was aimed at improving the foundation design for typical expansive shale in view of the geotechnical parameters, placement, and geoenvironmental conditions.
