Slope of Water Surface in the Erie Canal
The importance of obtaining levels of extreme accuracy in any case in which the natural flow of water in rivers or canals is concerned is obvious, hut especially where it is desired to ascertain the descent of the surface grade at low velocities. I have had occasion during the past year to direct the establishment of a series of benches on masonry along the line of the Erie Canal (Western Division), which undertaking has afforded some points of interest.
