Modeling of Multi-Phase Flow and Surfactant Flushing Using Transparent Aquabeads
The feasibility of using Transparent Aquabeads and an advanced imaging system to visualize geoenvironmental contamination problems is investigated. The developed system consists of (1) a transparent synthetic soil suitable for modeling natural soils with hydraulic conductivity in the 10–2 to 10–5 cm/sec range, (2) an imaging system, (3) surfactants, and (4) LNAPLS contaminants. Multi-phase flow and surfactant flushing tests were conducted using a layered soil system and two contaminants, mineral oil and motor oil. Because a transparent soil is used, the optical systems allows for visualizing surfactant flushing. The effect of surfactant viscosity on the recovery ratio is presented to illustrate the benefit of the developed system in geoenvironmental studies.
