Strength of Model Footing Resting on Treated Coir Mat Reinforced Sand
The natural fibers are cheap compared to synthetic fibers. On the other hand synthetic fibers are costly, though they last for long term but may pose environmental problems. However, the drawback of natural fibers is that it undergoes biodegradation. Even though coir fiber is durable for 8 to 10 years, treatment can be imparted to increase their durability by reducing water absorption of coir fibers. Sodium hydroxide based treatment used to treat the surface of the coir mat reduced the water absorption of coir mat by 35% compared to untreated coir mat. Model footing test were conducted using treated coir mat as reinforcement in sand to evaluate bearing capacity and settlement. Based on the above experimental investigation, it was found that the alkali treated coir mat showed significant improvement in bearing capacity in the range of increase varying from 8% to 10% in comparison to untreated coir mat reinforced sand.
