Implementation and Application Issues of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for Deep Foundations
The paper describes briefly the history of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) development in Canada and discusses some of the experiences, difficulties and challenges encountered during its implementation and application for deep foundations. The paper interrogates the derivation (calibration) of the geotechnical resistance factors specified for static load tests in the AASHTO and Canadian highway bridge design codes. The paper stresses the importance of understanding fundamental principles, effective communications between structural and geotechnical engineers, education and training. The majority of the issues usually identified in support of not using LRFD can frequently be attributed to the lack of understanding, communications, education and training of the geotechnical practitioner. All of these components will be required for successful implementation and acceptance of LRFD for geotechnical aspects of foundation engineering.
