Guidelines for the Application of Base Grouting for Drilled Shafts
Base grouting has proven to be an effective technique for mobilizing greater end bearing resistance for drilled shafts, and thereby achieving more economical foundations. Base grouting applications have grown considerably in the U.S. over the last 15 years, and it is anticipated that its use will continue to expand as owners and practitioners become more familiar with it and more confident in its results. However, despite favorable past performance, there remains uncertainty in the industry regarding the reliability of base grouting, as well as questions regarding design methodology and construction techniques. This paper provides a brief overview of the development and use of base grouting for drilled shafts, and discusses the current design and construction practices in the U.S. Based on the author's experience, guidelines are provided addressing design, construction details, field quality control, and verification load testing for base-grouted drilled shafts.
