Yielding of Fiber-Reinforced Granular Soils
Addition of short fibers to a granular medium can increase the shear strength of the composite. This is a desired effect in applications such as roads and airfields, mitigation of failed slopes, but also it might become a useful construction technique in extraterrestrial environments. Some results from the triaxial testing of fiber-reinforced sand are shown, and a method for developing a failure criterion is presented briefly. The failure criterion is found in closed form, and it is illustrated as a surface in the stress space. The theoretical prediction of failure stress falls surprisingly close to the experimental test results. A convenient way is shown for representing the strength of the fiber-reinforced granular composite using a substitution (or macroscopic) internal friction angle.
