Assessment of Rock Strength by Texas Cone Penetrometer and Uniaxial Compression Tests
This study compares strength of the rock mass as evaluated by the Texas Cone Penetration (TCP) field test and the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) laboratory test, both of which are commonly used as a basis for drilled shaft foundation design in Texas. Results from 965 sets of simultaneous data on Texas rock show that TCP-UCS correlations exist for some rock materials, and these correlations typically improve as the rock type is better differentiated. In most — but not all — cases, when intact core strength is adjusted to account for fractures, joints, and discontinuities in the rock mass, the TCP-UCS correlation improves. Overall, the TCP-UCS relationship is very weak to weak, a finding consistent with previous research.
