History and Aesthetics of the East River Bridges
The four East River Bridges connect the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. Built within 4 miles and 25 years of each other, the older bridges, particularly the Brooklyn Bridge, have inspired the design of the younger bridges. This is most of all true for the youngest of the four, the Manhattan Bridge. Despite the important role the bridges play in the city's connectivity, they were allowed to slip into disrepair during the mid-20th century. This has led to a billion dollar rehabilitation of the four bridges, carefully staged over the past two decades to allow for continuous connections between the city's boroughs.
