Individual Overtopping Volumes for Steep Low-Crested Structures
A good understanding of the overtopping performance of a structure involves not only the determination of the average overtopping rates but also of the individual overtopping volumes. However the knowledge on individual overtopping volumes in literature is still limited for specific conditions. To improve the understanding of individual overtopping volumes on steep low-crested structures in deep water, we performed 2D physical model tests for these conditions, with additional wave-per-wave overtopping volume measurements. This paper summarizes the knowledge on individual overtopping volumes, describes the physical model tests, and analyses the individual overtopping distribution and probability of overtopping of the dataset. The shape factor b of the Weibull distribution of individual overtopping volumes increased for increasing relative crest freeboards and for milder slopes; while the probability of overtopping decreased for increasing relative crest freeboards. The existing prediction formulae for b values performed well although slightly overpredicting the results. The probability of overtopping is consistently overpredicted by all the formulae.
