Mechanical Properties of Used Tire Granulates, Sand, and Cement Mixtures
One of the soil improvement and ground modification techniques is soil stabilization by mixing soil with admixtures. Cement is increasingly used as a stabilizing material as it helps increase the strength of soils and its strength increases with the curing time. Used tire granulates can be used as an admixture to stabilize soils. Many studies have been made on the use of shredded tires as a lightweight fill material. In this paper, results of direct shear test and permeability tests done on mixtures of granulated tires and sand to find their properties are presented. These samples are then mixed with different ratios of cement and a composite soil is achieved. CBR and unconfined compression tests are done on this composite soil. Composite soils have high unconfined compression strengths and CBR values. Finally, results of each experiment are discussed and comments over usages of composite soil and its efficiency are made.
