Flood Routing by Characteristic Methods
A modified form of the rectangular grid characteristic method and the characteristic method of specified distances are detailed. Computed solutions by the two methods are compared for different types of boundary conditions. The two methods are found to yield solutions that agree closely in all situations. The characteristic method of specified distances is found to take less computing time than the rectangular grid characteristic method, while the latter method requires less storage and is easier to program.
