Ground-based Interferometric Radar for Monitoring Slopes and Embankments
The ability to monitor and detect movements of slopes and embankments is of great value to geotechnical engineers. Conventional techniques such as optical surveys provide a coarse spatial sampling of ground movements. Repeat-pass radar interferometry is a measurement technique to detect and quantify very small surface movements over large areas by combining radar imagery of the same scene collected at different times. Ground-based interferometric radar (GBIR) is an emerging technology that has several advantages over space-borne measurements for civil engineering applications. Results are presented from measurements performed at three sites where slopes or embankments were monitored using GBIR. These results are used to demonstrate the attributes and capabilities of GBIR as well as limitations and challenges associated with using GBIR for slope monitoring.
