The ABT System of Railway for Steep Inclines
The problem of how to climb steep inclines on railways in the best and most economical way, bus taxed the inventive powers and exercised the brains of many and clever engineers. A third of a century or more ago, almost all of the important valleys of the civilized world had been occupied by rail way s d epending on weight and the adhesion of smooth surfaces as the chief elements of traction in moving railway trains. As the engine began to mount inclines, and as there was an ever-increasing desire to haul heavier trains, the locomotive was enlarged in all its capacities and made more ponderous.
