Team Teaching: A Solution to the Multidisciplinary Architectural Engineering Capstone Design Requirement
Architectural engineering is a multidisciplinary field incorporating construction management, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems design. ABET requires a capstone design course “based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier coursework”. This paper describes the impetus and development of team teaching architectural engineering capstone senior design sequence at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK). Since 2005, the TAMUK architectural engineering program has not found a faculty member with expertise in all architectural engineering areas. Projects of groups taught by engineering faculty met the rigor of one or two focus areas of architectural engineering design. Projects led by the holistic approach of architectural faculty addressed architectural design, basic engineering design, and sustainability integration. However, student projects did not meet the level of advanced engineering rigor expected of an engineering capstone course. In 2013, the first capstone architectural engineering senior design sequence at TAMUK was team taught. Multiple faculty provided lectures and technical guidance in their areas of expertise. This method integrated faculty qualified to support student development in the four primary tracks of architectural engineering technical design, as well as architectural design.
