Ground Water Pumping from Shallow Axisymmetric Ponds
The hydraulic aspects of pumping from axisymmetric ponds, or large diameter wells, as a means of developing shallow, unconfined aquifers are investigated, and it is shown that pond storage allows groundwater pumping at higher rates during short time periods than would be possible for continuous pumping. A finite element model that considers the effects of pond storage, partial penetration, pond size, and pumping time on the pumping discharge from the pond is developed. Numerical results are presented in terms of generalized dimensionless variables, and are applied to a design problem of selecting the pond diameter, pumping rate, and pumping schedule for given aquifer properties.
