Low Temperature Property Investigation on Polyphosphoric Acid Hybrid Modified Asphalt
Modification of polyphosphoric acid (PPA) can significantly improve the high temperature properties of asphalt binders. However, its influence on the low temperature property is not yet clear. In this study, the bending beam rheometer test (BBR) was conducted to evaluate the low temperature properties of PPA hybrid asphalt binders under different aging conditions. Furthermore, the FTIR test was used for chemical analysis of the asphalt binders. Finally, thermal stress restrained specimen tests (TSRST) were used to evaluate the low temperature performance of the asphalt mixture. The results indicated that PPA had a positive effect on the low temperature properties of asphalt and the optimum ratio was obtained. Meanwhile, PPA also showed effects on anti-aging both in the BBR test and chemical analysis. Finally, TSRST test results showed that addition of PPA can slightly improve the low temperature performance of base asphalt mixtures.
