Identifying the Contributing Factors to the Severity of Animal-Vehicle Collisions
Animal-vehicle collisions (AVCs) are a significant issue for transportation agencies. This paper aims to identify the contributing factors to AVCs to reduce the number and severity of such crashes. The crash data is obtained from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), which provides crucial information regarding crash severity, time of the crash, weather condition, driver age, vehicle speed, and type of animal. The logistic classifier is applied to identify the most important contributing factors to the severity of AVCs. The results of this study help transportation agencies develop various types of AVC mitigation measures to reduce the number of animal-related crashes based on the historical crash data and landscape structure.
