A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Advances in mechanization and power electronics have helped to make retractable roofs and large operable walls and doors more practical and efficient to build. In recent years, architects and engineers have collaborated to develop new, creative forms of kinetic architecture. Three recent projects incorporating large kinetic elements highlight the critical roles played by structural engineers in integrating structural designs with the mechanization elements needed to make structures move.
