Experimental Study on Acoustic Emission Characteristics and Energy Properties during Rock Failure
Acoustic emission (AE) is an important physical phenomenon where rocks are deformed and fractured because of loading. It is also a direct constitutive parameter that demonstrates the mechanical property of rocks. Experiments on large-scale rock failure were performed in tri-axial stress state, and the mechanical properties of rocks and AE characteristics of the rocks were obtained. A rapid multi-channel AE data acquisition system was used to monitor the spatio-temporal distribution of damages before fracture. Based on the experimental results, the deformation failure and energy properties of granite, sandstone, and marble were examined. A mathematical expression between the AE of the released accumulated energy and the load was derived. The experimental results verified several precursors, such as accelerating energy release, of the macro-fracture of the samples.
