The Reconstruction of the Stony River Dam
This paper describes the reconstruction and strengthening of the Stony River Dam, which failed on January 15th, 1914. After the failure, on investigation of the foundation conditions and the parts of the structure which remained intact, it was found that those portions required strengthening and revision in a number of important features. The lessons indicated by the results of the investigation are significant. The dam, even as reconstructed and strengthened, is founded largely on clayey soil, thus presenting most difficult foundation conditions.
