Darcy-Weisbach versus Hazen-Williams: No Calm in West Palm
Both the Darcy-Weisbach and Hazen-Williams equations are used by water professionals in the analysis of flows and pressures in water distribution systems. Using a debate format, this paper will examine the history and original underlying assumptions of both equations and then debate which equation is most appropriate under what conditions. In particular, the paper will examine the question: With the advent of modern computers, should the Hazen-Williams equation no longer be used in water distribution system analysis? The debate will provide both affirmative and negative positions.
