Shear Buckling Behavior of Steel Plate Girders at Elevated Temperatures
Fires resulting from accidents involving tanker trucks or other vehicles pose a significant hazard to highway bridges, particularly steel plate girder bridges. These fires can burn at very high temperatures such that the strength of steel decreases considerably. Web shear buckling is hypothesized to be a gauge of the structural fire performance of a steel plate girder and this paper investigates this mechanism at elevated temperatures. Finite element solutions were compared with closed-form solutions that were previously developed for ambient temperature conditions. The FE models were based on the following parameters: material model, span-to-depth ratios, and temperature range from 20°C to 1100°C. Results show that the applicability of the existing closed-form solution should be re-examined, predominantly at elevated temperatures for larger span-to-depth ratios.
