A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The 1907 collapse of a bridge in Québec led to the creation of the Fritz Engineering Laboratory at Lehigh University, perhaps the most significant testing facility in American history. The Fritz has tested structural components for such landmarks as the original World Trade Center, the Panama Canal, and the first (1940) bridge over the part of Puget Sound referred to as the Tacoma Narrows.
