Inherent Anisotropy in Pavement Subgrades
Limited attention has been devoted to study experimentally or numerically, the inherent anisotropy of pavement layers, specifically the effect of subgrade anisotropy on long-term pavement performance. This paper presents findings of study conducted in Fortaleza, Brazil conducted on undisturbed soil samples collected from the Barreiras Formation. Anisotropy of this deposit was studied via direct shear, triaxial, and resilient modulus tests, performed on samples oriented in horizontal and vertical in-situ directions. Results showed that the Barreiras Formation soils present significant anisotropy, which was quantified in detail in this study.
