Single Degree of Freedom Modeling and Testing of a Pile under Lateral Impact Load
In this paper the behavior of single piles under lateral impact is investigated by using pendulum and bogie tests. The model steel pile is embedded 1m into soil deposit and impacted at a level of 0.3 m with different masses at different velocities. The range of velocity is 2.5 m/s to 10 m/s and the mass of the pendulum is between 250 kg and 860 kg to. Three types of used soils are hard clay, loose sand and crushed lime-stone. The acceleration and displacement of the striking mass are measures. The results show that the soil response to impact is function of the soil stiffness but that the inertia and damping terms are also important contributors. In order to model the system, a Single Degree of Freedom (SDF) model with two different basic materials is used to find the best simple one to predict the behavior of pile under impact.
